this is a, "welcome to BEAST airline!" kind of post.

Doing this because Kate and Di wanted to know more about BEAST, and I mean, who am I to turn down a chance to convert non-believers? ;D ;D ;D

Who are they? Where do they come from? Why should you care about yet another Korean boyband? What makes them different from the others?

Why should you like them?

Hopefully, in the course of this pimp post, you'll find that answer out for yourself. I can't tell you to love them, I can't order you to learn their names, their nicknames, their ages, but I am definitely up for the challenge to opening the door to them for you. I'm up for giving you guys a friendly nudge in their direction.

BEAST is, as you've probably heard, a 6 strong boyband hailing from South Korea, The World. Commonly known as "the reject band" due to all the members' various brushes with chances at stardom before debuting with BEAST, the boys have grasped this chance they were given and have given it their all, and here we are, a year and some months after their official debut with their popularity soaring and talent being recognized across the board. I thought that I would never love a group as much or more than I do Big Bang, but BEAST have beaten Big Bang by leaps and bounds. ♥ Anyway! I'll try and not let my bias show but...it's hard. :|

First up, the members, from oldest to youngest.

DOOJOON

(you can click on each square and that'll take you to the full sized pic! same goes for everyone else afterwards. :D)

Full Name: Yoon Doo Joon (Hangul: 윤두준)
Nicknames: Doodoo, Yoon Leader, Butt Doojoon
Band Position: Leader
Born: July 4, 1989
Height: 180cm
Weight: 67kg
Blood Type: A
Hobbies: Soccer and video games
Social Networks: twitter

Doojoon is the oldest, and the leader of the group, and he's the father personality-wise, also, which makes the position appropriate, I think. He's very versatile when it comes to what he does in the group -- he sings and raps, depending on the song and if he's needed to to balance out the sound of the song. He's also in charge of keeping in touch with the fanbase via their official fancafe, and generally, he's the responsible one of the group. However, his sense of humor is also on point, and he has a really natural sense of when to be funny and he calls it his "gag instinct". (Junno could learn a thing or two.) ...it fails sometimes, though.

Before BEAST, Doojoon was a participant on JYP's "Hot Blood", the show that eventually put together the idol groups 2AM and 2PM, but needless to say, Doojoon was eliminated. Afterwards, he thought about his career and thus accepted his move from JYP to Cube Ent. Although he's a member of BEAST now, he's still very close with the boys of Oneday, hence making this perf of Brown Eyed Girls' "Sign" amazing...even though Jokwon makes the entire thing for me, working that fan like a bamf. Er.

In addition to BEAST, he was featured in G.NA's pv for "I'll Back Off So You Can Live" and took over Junhyung's rap part in this performance of the song. He's also done some modeling, although where that video went idek...if I find it, I'll edit this post.

HYUNSEUNG

Full Name: Jang Hyun Seung ♥ (Hangul: 장현승)
Nicknames: Seungseung, Bambi, Housemaid Jang, Rancho
Band Position: the Really Pretty One
Born: September 3, 1989
Height: 176cm
Weight: 58kg
Blood Type: B
Hobbies: Bowling, surfing the net (hide your porn!)
Social Networks: yozm. (he's the only one without a twitter. I'm hoping someone bribes him into getting one.)

Every band has That Pretty One, and Hyunseung is definitely That One in BEAST. The other members call him the prettiest and says that he looks like a girl all the time, and then he gets all miffy and in a snit about it and it's actually really, really adorable, because he's really quiet and shy, so he just sits there and stews and sends subtle death glares at everyone. However, he's the one that puts absolutely everything he has into each and every cycle of performances they have and is one of the most hard-working out of the entire group...when he's not lost in his own world. He's one of the main vocalists in BEAST, along with being one of the best dancers (he's in the beanie), and he's known for having one of the best glides in kpop (he's in the black hoodie!). On the flip side, he will break into English to plead with your child to eat. ...your child will also refuse to award him any balloons, making him feel like a complete loner. (Ryo, you have competition for Loneliest Idol.) But if you give him four stars, he'll give you his little sister!

Hyunseung was originally a trainee under YG and was featured on the Big Bang Documentary, the MTV show which helped YG put together what would today be known as Big Bang. Under the nickname SO-1, he trained with and lived alongside the rest of the current Big Bang members until he was eliminated on the 9th episode, reasons being that even though his vocals and dancing were more than strong, he lacked stage presence (which I agreed with, even though I loved the shit out of him). After being cut, he was depressed for awhile and almost completely gave up dancing until a hyung of his told him to get his shit together. He went to Cube and trained some more, and became a member of BEAST. He's still close to the Big Bang members, especially GD. ♥

JUNHYUNG

Full Name: Yong Jun Hyung (Hangul: 용준형)
Nicknames: Yongyong, Yongsica, Yong Mother, Junhyunf (this last one is a fandom fav.)
Band Position: The Nagging Mom
Born: December 19, 1989
Height: 179cm
Weight: 64kg
Blood Type: O
Hobbies: Lyric-writing, watching movies.
Social Networks: twitter

Junhyung is, legit, the mom of the group. He nags and cleans up after everybody and yells and scolds them for not doing it themselves, and when he takes charge when Doojoon's not there (Doojoon used to go abroad a lot when he was a regular on the show Danbi) , Yoseob complains. I swear, without him, the boys would live in a pigsty of squalor. He's the resident rapper of the group, composing them for their songs, and he spends a lot of time in a studio, any studio, just working things out, thinking of new ideas. He puts a ton of effort into everything they do. He's also pretty quiet but can be an absolute dork as well, like having conversations with his Pikachu and getting rejected by little kids everywhere.

Junhyung's not so much a "reject member" as such, probably more like a "second chance" member? Before BEAST, he was a member of the ex-boyband XING, as he took Kibum of U-KISS' place once he left, but after releasing two singles with them, Junhyung left. However, since debuting with BEAST, he's also been featured on tracks for Hyuna ("Change"; rap starts at around 1:30), K.Will ("Present"), and the aforementioned song by G.NA.

YOSEOB

Full Name: Yang Yo Seob (Hangul: 양요섭)
Nicknames: Seobseob, Yangyo, Small Head Yang
Band Position: Visual Maknae
Born: January 5th, 1990
Height: 174cm
Weight: 56kg
Blood Type: B
Hobbies: eating, beatbox, lyric-writing
Social Networks: yozm, twitter

Yoseob is the tiny, cute one that eats all the time! He actually used to hate it when people said he was cute and stuff, but eventually, he decided to just accept it and so now he uses it against the world, because how can you not think he's absolutely adorable? However, he's probably more of an imp than the puppy type; he's hilarious and likes to playfully rile the others up, yet he's so warmhearted and lovely otherwise, especially when he's at home helping his parents out with their restaurant. He's also one of the few idols to tell his fans to stop being crazy and have them actually listen! He's also garnered the envy of Doojoon because the boy eats...and eats...and eats...but just never puts on any weight.

Yoseob is, without a doubt in my mind, the best singer in BEAST. He's not a reject member, either; he was a JYP trainee at first, who got pissed off when he received a bad practice review and left, but then trained with M-Boat for five or so years until Kikwang (who trained with him at JYP for a bit) told him to go to Cube instead. Since BEAST's debut, he's done two duets; a cover of G.NA's "What I Want to do if I Have a Lover" with Gayoon of 4Minute, and one with Drama of Dalmatian ("First Snow, First Kiss"), who Yoseob used to do dumb skits with when they were still trainees under M-Boat, and it's so friggin' prection how bffy they are omg. ♥

KIKWANG

Full Name: Lee Ki Kwang (Hangul: 이기광)
Nicknames: AJ, Kwangkwang, Kkwangie, Dumbkwang, Kikwabs (...this last one is by fandom)
Band Position: The Muscular One
Born: March 30th, 1990
Height: 174cm
Weight: 58kg
Blood Type: A
Hobbies: watching movies, dancing, some sports
Social Networks: twitter, me2day

Ohhhhh, AJ. AJ...is mind-numbingly gullible and special. He's the one that gets picked on the most in BEAST just because of his somewhat quiet, amiable nature; he says random things at random times, and everyone just...pokes fun at him because it's just way too easy. He also works out a lot to keep his body in shape, but on his days off he likes to ride his bike around town and go to cafes and read, and he carries a backpack with him and he looks like he's in high school. It's all just...very, very adorable. ;~; Despite this charming image, though, he's the ~muscle~ of the group, and he's another main vocalist, and he shares the dancing title with Hyunseung.

AJ isn't known as AJ anymore, as he goes by Kikwang now, but he was first an attempt of Cube's to throw a solo artist into the mix, but it didn't work out so well. Cube made some statement about how it was their plan to have AJ debut first to attract attention and that they were going to debut with BEAST all along but...idk about all that. He, like Yoseob, was a JYP trainee who left and went to Cube instead. He hasn't done much singing outside of BEAST, but he has acted in a TV series and he's a regular on the variety show "Hot Brothers".

DONGWOON

Full Name: Son Dong Woon (Hangul: 손동운)
Nicknames: Dongdong, Old Man Son, Son Bear, Godwoon (...also fandom.)
Band Position: Real Maknae
Born: June 6th, 1990
Height: 181cm
Weight: 64kg
Blood Type: A
Hobbies: reading
Social Networks: twitter, cyworld, yozm

Dongwoon, the real maknae! Dongwoon has what I like to call the Pi syndrome -- he's completely adorable and goofy and fun-loving until you stick a camera in his face. Then he completely clams up and acts all cool, although he did save himself from public humiliation pretty well. I think he's definitely moved past this a little, though! He was still in high school when BEAST were gearing up for debut, so the camera while they were filming MTV B2ST would follow him to high school and he would introduce all his friends and he was definitely very, very popular and a naturally social person. He's also, I think, the smartest in BEAST, in that he has a really, really good grasp of English and Chinese, in addition to his Korean, and he also took the college entrance exams pretty recently and got in! At any rate, fans often wonder why the hell he looks like he has Arab blood in him since he's 100% Korean, and they also attribute this to why he looks way older than he is.

Dongwoon is the other one besides Yoseob who wasn't a reject! He started off at JYP and had actually trained with Kikwang for a bit. Eventually, he was moved from JYP to Cube and kept training until he debuted with BEAST; it's not much of a big story, really. He was actually overshadowed a lot when BEAST first started out; he was always put in the back, but lately, they've widened their choreo to have all of them visible rather than the pyramid formations they always used. He's also released a duet with Minkyung of Davichi called "Udon", but the powers that be banned it from being performed in Korea because they used the Japanese word for udon...because it's udon............... ............ ... :|

FROM DEBUT TO NOW

(left to right: dongwoon, hyunseung, doojoon, kikwang, yoseob, junhyung)

While the boys were relatively unknown to widespread media during their start, they already had a tiny, devoted fanbase thanks to the MTV documentary "MTV B2ST" that filmed their trials and tribulations leading up to their debut. They were called B2ST at first, as an acronym for "Boys 2 Search for Top", but for some reason, their agency (Cube Entertainment) changed it to BEAST few days before their official debut on October 14th, 2009. Their very first mini-album ("BEAST is the B2ST") was released on that day, and the boys made their live debut two days later with the song, "Bad Girl".

Eventually, this mini-album would sell 65,000 copies, which, for a rookie group, is damn near unheard of. In that December, BEAST was awarded Rookie of the Month by South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The group's second album ("Shock of the New Era") was reelased on March 2nd, 2010, and despite it being leaked online a day early, sales climbed quickly, and to date have sold more than 20,000 copies.

03 Special [perf]
04 내 여자친구를 부탁해 (Say No) [pv]

The title song "Shock" won them their first #1 on MNet's "M! Countdown", which resulted in a lot of crying boys and sniffly voices during their encore. During their "Shock" promotions, BEAST released a self-made video for the song "Take Care of My Girlfriend (Say No)" and a less than serious video for a song off their first mini, "Mystery". Also, if you watch their performances of "Mystery", I guarantee that you won't be able to listen to it or think about it without doing the head bob.

After a slew of performances at charity concerts and the 8th Hollywood Bowl in LA, BEAST came back and released their third mini-album ("Mastermind") on September 28, 2010, starting promotions with "Clenching My Fist Tight".

03 V.I.U (Very Important U) [dance party]

They moved on to "Soom" and on the 14th of October, they won their first Mutizen, again from Mnet Countdown. In the middle of October, they flew to Japan and held their showcase there and performed 9 tracks, including "Bad Girl", "Shock" and "Soom", and made their official plan to debut in Japan in February of 2011.

Then, a mere month later, BEAST came back with the unofficial part 2 to "Mastermind", a mini-album called "Lights Go On Again", released on November 9th, 2010.

Mini-album 4: Lights Go On Again [buy / mu / ddl]
01 Lights go on again [teaser]
02 Beautiful [pv / perf]
03 니가 제일 좋아 [perf]

05 I'm sorry

They went on to hold a few concerts, the first one on December 12th. Despite reservations from critics, claiming they were ~being hasty~ in reserving the Seoul Olympic Gymnasium, servers crashed and devoted B2UTIES (the official name for their fans. Ain't that cute?) wailed to the skies as tickets sold out in a mere, what, half an hour? Something. Seeing as most rookie groups don't even get to have concerts until two, three years after debut, this was a major deal. The concert series was titled "Welcome to BEAST Airline" and had a cute theme of the boys as pilots, taking you on a pleasure ride in their pants; due to the popularity of the concerts, Cube announced two encore performances in February, appropriately titled, "Welcome BACK to BEAST Airline".

On December 21st, another mini-album was released ("My Story") consisting of three duets composed by its respective members and the full version of "Lights Go On Again".

Mini-album 5: My Story [mu / ddl]
01 문이 닫히면 [perf]
02 Thanks to [perf]
03 Let it Snow [perf]
04 Lights go on again (full version)

Right now, the boys are apparently taking a well deserved vacation, although some of them have acting duties and various other performances to do, but they definitely have a big year ahead of them with an official Japanese debut and concerts coming up, and not to mention fans are eagerly waiting the video for "I Like You The Best". But their momentum in 2010 only means bigger and better things, and they've proven within a year that they are no longer "the reject band".

That's all I'm putting in this, since if I get into TV shows and acting and stuff this would never, ever end, but if anyone's interested in their documentary series (MTV B2ST and B2ST ALMIGHTY), then let me know and I can dig up dl links for you, maybe in a separate post or through PM or something. This was just to introduce you, after all! :D Hopefully, I did my job okay and BEAST has wormed their way into your good graces! ♥

Entry is unlocked, so feel free to pimp, etc, etc!
